We recommend you bring a minimum caliber of 7mm Remington Magnum, to hunt all the species in New Zealand. Shots can range between 100 to 300 yards. There is no difficulty in bringing your own rifles into New Zealand; provided that they are sporting firearms (no military rifles or handguns are permitted). A firearms licence and import permit are obtained at the point of entry and cost NZ$25. We have a variety of sporting firearms such as high powered rifles, shotguns and .22 rifles available at no cost. We do however ask that you bring the suitable ammunition for the caliber of your choice.
For U.S. citizens bringing their own firearms into New Zealand from the U.S. please ensure you have an Export Certificate for the rifle/s from U.S. Customs and Homeland Security. These can be obtained from all major airports.
We recommend that you bring a good set of binoculars, as much of the hunting is held in open alpine country. It is not necessary to bring rangefinders or spotting scopes as all of our guides carry a full set of high quality Leica optics.
New Zealand's climate can change from day to day. Our seasons are the opposite of those in the northern hemisphere. We recommend that you bring light to medium weight hunting clothes so that you may layer up or down to suit. It is also recommended that you bring a light rain jacket and a pair of waterproof boots with plenty of ankle support and deep cleated soles for alpine hunting.
